HAWKER RIDGE VINEYARD

Hawker Ridge Wines is a boutique, family owned and operated vineyard in the Mt Barker Wine Region of Western Australia.  The vineyard is a few quiet kilometres from the Kendenup township;  20 kilometres from Mt Barker and 70 kilometres north of Albany on the edge of the Southern Ocean.  The climate is cool and dry with warm summers.

The vineyard has sensational views north-east to the Stirling Ranges and south-east to the Porongurups.  Gentle sea breezes blow from the south-west and south-east, and on summer evenings cool air flows down from the slopes of the Stirling Ranges.

The vineyard sits atop a local high point, Hawker Ridge, on well-drained gravelly loam, rich in lime and free of salt.  It is an ideal location for growing cool climate Shiraz and Riesling. Kendenup is part of the Mount Barker wine growing region which is located in the Great Southern Region. The Great Southern is fast developing a reputation as one of the premium Reisling growing regions in Australia. But don't forget the Shiraz, or Cabernet Sauvignion. These two reds are outstanding varieties in the region.

We first planted vines of Shiraz and Riesling at Hawker Ridge in September 2001 with the first vintages harvested in 2004.  Our wines are made by acclaimed winemaker Mike Garland with the Shiraz winning medals at the Sydney Royal Show and Qantas Mount Barker Show.

There are some other local vineyards located in Kendenup including Arcadia Wines and Gilberts Wines. If you are in the region make sure you make a trip to Kendenup, then follow Red Gum Pass Rd to see the magnificent Stirling Ranges up close. These Ranges are the second oldest mountain ranges in WA with a unique variety of flora and fauna.
